South Davidson Interns at work!
What is an internship?
An internship is one form of work based learning in which the student leaves campus for one period each day to observe and participate in an on-the-job experience with a community professional. Students are able to consider different careers, learn workplace behavior, develop industry-specific skills and apply academic skills to the real world of career opportunities. This is a great opportunity to see if the career area you are considering might be a good fit for you. Students earn graduation credit.

The Peer Helper program allows our students to assist elementary and middle school teachers with remediation. It is available to Seniors who are on track for graduation, have transportation, have a history of good attendance and behavior, and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Please use the same application form as the Internship program. If you are not sure which program is right for you, please come by to see Mrs. Hendrix.
Here's what our interns have to say:
At Denton Wesleyan Daycare I have begun to experience responsibility. I have been trusted with all the children at the daycare. They have let me be in the room all alone with multiple kids at a time, which makes me feel really good. Also each week I grow a stronger bond with each and every child in my class. It is an absolute amazing experience. I love it. -Summer
Interning at Denton Animal Hospital has been very exciting in its own right. I never realized just HOW much goes on in one hour on the job for the staff. Keeping records, preforming numerous examinations at one time, and keeping everything organized between the pet's owner and the pet can be quite stressful- but it's a challenge I'm happy to take on. On the very first day at the site, I witnessed animal surgery and actually got to be in the O.R. during the surgery! Although animals are different than humans, many similar medical precautions take place including: blood pressure, oxygen rate, heartbeat, and pain management. I also learned that an animal's breathing patterns while asleep are VERY important and have to be recorded for the animal's future health. Upon the end of the surgery, I got the chance to become acquainted with the surgical tools the veterinarian uses during surgery, and many are similar to those that surgeons use in the operating room. I'm very glad I am part of the DAH operations now and all of the staff are fun yet very professional at the same time. I'm looking forward to the remaining of the semester! - Jessica
During the first couple of weeks at my intern site, I was able to do and see many different things. As an intern at Denton Drug I am very pleased with how things are done, and the people I am around. Although it is a very difficult career, I can see myself pursuing it. Some days it became very hectic with the phones ringing, and so many customers coming in at once but with it happening every day I have become used to it and the difficult obstacles that followed. I have learned many different things in these past couple of weeks. I have learned the top 10 drugs, and several other things with the help of the pharmacists. I am having a blast and I am very happy with the choice I have made with where I am interning. I am also glad with the bond I have formed with the coworkers. I strongly believe this is the field I would like to pursue after graduating high school. - Madison
I've learned responsibility through this internship by helping the children that struggle this year. I work with them every day to help them get a better understanding of their reading and their sight words they should know. Some children don't get as much learning experiences at home as others do, so it makes it very important that they get the extra time at school. It is my responsibility to work with the kids who need it. I enjoy every bit of helping those children. I also think that one responsibility is to make a connection; that way I can help further their education. It's been a great opportunity to be working with these kids and helping them. I couldn't imagine not enjoying the internship. It gives you such an exciting experience that I have been lucky to experience. There are responsibilities to being an intern but they are there to help the kids better understand what they are supposed to learn in only a year. - Brittany
