ike kearney scholarship
I.H. (Ike) Kearney served the Davidson County School system for forty years as a teacher, coach and its first Director of Vocational Education. Working with Ike is well remembered by fewer and fewer members of our CTE family who will never forget the twinkle in his eyes and the ever-present bow tie. His spirit of love and support for vocational education made an impression on many of us that remains a significant influence on how we approach our careers today. We continually strive to pass along a part of that spirit to new family members.
Mr. Kearney was an active member of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, the Holly Grove Lutheran Church in the Davis Townsend community, The Lions Club, The Elks Club, Sapona Country Club and the Democratic Party. He was a "voice" that Davidson County and North Carolina decision makers heard; and, his voice always advocated vocational education.
Shortly after Mr. Kearney's death in April of 1984, a group of vocational educators who had worked closely with him proposed and established the Ike Kearney Memorial Scholarship Program for graduates of vocational education programs. The Scholarship Program complies with section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The first scholarship in the amount of $300.00 was awarded in 1984 to Denton High School graduate Jones Loflin who is now a nationally recognized motivational speaker. To date over $140,100.00 has been awarded to well deserving CTE students.
